StEM in the Garden
Our most recent initiative, StEM in the Garden, aims to support schools in developing the use of their school grounds or gardening area by donating resources and activity plans designed specifically for scientific investigations outside the classroom in the school garden.
Each StEM in the Garden box contains ten differentiated activity plans with explicit links to the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for Science, as well as the resources needed for each activity, and are suitable for curriculum enrichment or after-school provision.
Our active and creative approach to learning not only engages and inspires children to explore and find out about the world around them but also develops the key skills needed for scientific enquiry.
For example, in Creating a Minature Greenhouse, the children can observe the lifecycle of plants and investigate the ideal conditions needed for growth; testing the acidity levels in the soil, the children can decide which plants will grow well in the garden; and using the bug catchers and Minibeast Identification and classification charts, the children can identify invertebrates and investigate the fascinating world of micro-habitats.
In January 2026, Steamworks Learning had the privilege of being able to contribute to the development of the School Garden at Brunswick Primary School, Sheffield.
Please complete the StEM in the Garden nomination form if you would like to nominate a school to participate in this initiative (Sheffield schools only).
